Why San Vigilio is the perfect starting point for motorcycle tours in the Dolomites

St. Vigil is not just somewhere in the Dolomites, but ideally and strategically located between the great classics and the quieter hidden gems. From here, you can reach the Sellaronda, Würzjoch, Falzarego, Valparola, Giau, Marmolada, the Prags Valley, and many other highlights in a short time. This reduces transfer times, enhances the riding experience, and ensures that the very first kilometers from the hotel are already part of the tour adventure.

The Almhof Hotel Call****S takes this location advantage to an even higher level: as a motorcycle hotel in the Dolomites, it combines touring expertise with a high-quality wellness offering. This makes it especially ideal for couples in which not both partners want to get on the motorcycle every day. While one partner enjoys the Dolomites’ mountain passes, the other can spend a relaxing day in the spa area – and in the evening, both come together again for a holiday that works perfectly for both.

A. Short Scenic Rides for Leisure Riders

These tours are perfect for anyone who wants to experience the Dolomites in a relaxed way and with all their senses. Riders can look forward to a harmonious mix of gentle curves, impressive views, charming places and enjoyable stops. Ideal for those who love short yet memorable rides and still want plenty of time for relaxation, fine dining and SPA moments at the hotel.

1) Curve Rush beneath Sass de Putia at Würzjoch Pass

Motorcycle tour to the Würzjoch from St. Vigil | Peitlerkofel and Dolomite panorama
A winding motorcycle tour from St. Vigil to the Würzjoch with views of the Peitlerkofel. A quiet Dolomite classic and ideal to combine with the spa at Almhof Hotel Call.

Würzjoch and Peitlerkofel – the quiet curve tour from St. Vigil

Quick profile:
104 km · 2,130 m elevation gain · Difficulty: relaxed scenic ride

Introduction:
The Würzjoch is one of the most beautiful Dolomite passes for motorcyclists who do not just want to tick off the big names, but experience the finer, quieter side of the region. Starting from St. Vigil, it becomes a short yet exceptionally rewarding loop right in the heart of the Dolomite landscape.

Detailed route description:
You leave St. Vigil heading toward St. Martin in Thurn. This first section is relaxed to ride and scenically impressive, because you do not plunge straight into a major pass setting, but ease naturally into the tour.
In St. Martin in Thurn, you can include the Museum Ladin Ciastel de Tor as a cultural opening stop. From there, follow the road via Antermoia toward the Würzjoch / Passo delle Erbe. The higher you climb, the more striking the Peitlerkofel becomes in the landscape.
The ascent to the Würzjoch is narrower and more intimate than the roads over the well-known Sellaronda passes. That is exactly what makes it so appealing to ride, especially for experienced touring riders who enjoy the rhythm of smaller roads. At the top, it is well worth taking a longer photo stop at the alpine meadows and viewpoints.
For the return ride, follow the same route back via Antermoia and St. Martin in Thurn to St. Vigil. This is precisely what keeps the tour stress-free and gives it the character of a deliberately designed half-day classic.

Top stops & POIs:
St. Martin in Thurn, Museum Ladin, Antermoia, Würzjoch, alpine meadows and viewpoints at the pass.

Panorama check:
Peitlerkofel, Puez-Odle, Sas de Putia, Aferer Geisler, Gadertal.

Why this tour is a perfect fit for Almhof Hotel Call:
The Würzjoch is the ideal loop for guests who value motorcycling and wellness equally. You are back at the hotel early enough to spend the afternoon consciously enjoying the spa, or to round off the day together with your partner in the infinity pool. That makes a stay at Almhof Hotel Call a high-quality experience for both bikers and non-bikers alike.

Riding notes:
No tolls. There are some local narrow sections and parts of the road are tighter, so a defensive riding style is recommended. In the early season and after thunderstorms, expect gravel or debris on the road surface.

2) Lake Braies Mirror Loop

Lake Braies by motorcycle from St. Vigil | Panoramic Dolomite tour
A motorcycle tour from St. Vigil to Lake Braies with a relaxed route and sweeping Dolomite views. Ideal for scenic riders and for combining with wellness at Almhof Hotel Call.

Motorcycle tour to Lake Braies from St. Vigil

Quick profile:
126 km · 1,980 m elevation gain · Difficulty: relaxed scenic ride

Introduction:
This loop is all about landscape, water, and the feeling of riding deep into the north-eastern Dolomite scenery. Lake Braies is one of South Tyrol’s most iconic natural landmarks, and St. Vigil is an ideal starting point for reaching this place of longing by motorcycle.

Detailed route description:
From Almhof Hotel Call, you first ride down toward Olang. The opening section is smooth and easy to ride, making it ideal for warming up. From Olang, continue toward Welsberg, where the landscape visibly opens up toward the Upper Puster Valley.
In Welsberg, turn into the Prags Valley. This part of the route becomes quieter, greener, and more focused in terms of scenery. The road leads gently uphill into the valley until you reach the area around Lake Braies.
At the lake itself, a rushed photo stop is not what this place calls for. Instead, it deserves a deliberate pause. The reflection of Seekofel / Croda del Becco makes this location one of the emotional highlights of the tour. Afterwards, ride back along the same valley road to Welsberg.
The return to St. Vigil follows the route back via Olang toward Mareo. This keeps the tour technically easy while still offering outstanding scenery.

Top stops & POIs:
Welsberg, Prags Valley, Lake Braies, nature park information points.

Panorama check:
Seekofel, Prags Dolomites, Upper Puster Valley, Kronplatz.

Why this tour is a perfect fit for Almhof Hotel Call:
This loop is perfect for guests looking for a calm and easy riding day. At the same time, a non-riding partner can enjoy an ideal wellness day at the hotel, because the biker is not out on an exhausting ride and returns early. This strengthens the property’s positioning as a Dolomites motorcycle hotel with genuine appeal for couples as well.

Riding notes:
Access to Lake Braies is seasonally regulated, especially during peak season, so check time slots and traffic management rules in advance. No traditional pass toll.

3) Kronplatz Culture and Curves

Motorcycle tour to Kronplatz from St. Vigil | Bruneck, panorama and Messner Museum
A relaxed motorcycle tour from St. Vigil to Kronplatz with Bruneck and MMM Corones. Perfect for an easy riding day with a wellness finish at Almhof Hotel Call.

Kronplatz, Bruneck and culture – an easy motorcycle tour from St. Vigil

Quick profile:
101 km · 1,690 m elevation gain · Difficulty: relaxed scenic ride

Introduction:
Not every holiday ride needs four mountain passes and maximum altitude. This loop to Kronplatz and Bruneck is ideal for warm-up days, rest days, or for guests who want to combine a motorcycle holiday with culture. The Messner Mountain Museum Corones is one of the region’s standout cultural highlights.

Detailed route description:
You start in St. Vigil and ride toward Olang, then continue on to Bruneck. The route remains pleasant, with a flowing layout and enough scenery to feel fully rewarded even without the drama of a major mountain pass.
In Bruneck, you can include a stop in the old town or place the focus directly on Kronplatz. Depending on the road choice and available time, continue toward the Reischach / Kronplatz area, where the loop becomes richer in both cultural and panoramic terms.
Afterwards, follow the familiar main route back toward Olang and then continue to St. Vigil. This is not a day for rushing, but for good breaks, enjoyable food, and an early afternoon at the spa.

Top stops & POIs:
Bruneck, Kronplatz, Messner Mountain Museum Corones.

Panorama check:
Kronplatz, the northern Dolomites, Puster Valley, the outer scenery of the Fanes area.

Why this tour is a perfect fit for Almhof Hotel Call:
Ideal for couples: one partner enjoys a relaxed ride, while the other starts the wellness day right away or joins later for a shared afternoon at the spa. This shows that wellness for bikers is a strong part of the experience even on shorter, lighter tour days.

Riding notes:
No tolls. A very good loop for unsettled weather or for the day after arrival.

Around Fanes-Sennes-Braies – nature park tour from St. Vigil

109 km · 1,760 m elevation gain · Difficulty: relaxed scenic ride

Introduction:
St. Vigil lies directly beside the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, one of the most impressive landscape areas in the northern Dolomites. It is precisely this immediate proximity that makes the hotel so strategically valuable for a motorcycle holiday in South Tyrol.

Detailed route description:
From the hotel, you first ride along smaller and medium-sized roads in the Mareo area, then continue toward Olang and along the edge of the park through the northern Dolomite region.
Depending on how you shape the loop, you can include Bruneck as a cultural stop or the southern edge of the Puster Valley as a panoramic line. This tour is defined less by individual major passes and more by a coherent landscape arc around the nature park.
Via the well-known connecting roads, you return to St. Vigil without ever losing the sense of riding through the hotel’s core landscape setting.

Top stops & POIs:
Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park area, Olang, Bruneck, small viewpoints along the park edge.

Panorama check:
Fanes, Senes, Braies, Kronplatz, Mareo Valley.

Why this tour is a perfect fit for Almhof Hotel Call:
This loop leaves enough time for a long spa afternoon and is therefore especially strong for the dual focus of “biker and non-biker.” It is exactly the kind of content a Belvita Leading Wellnesshotel needs in a motorcycle-travel context.

Riding notes:
No tolls. Ideal in changeable weather or as a relaxed in-between day.

5) Evening Gold above Val Badia

Quick profile:
112 km · 1,840 m elevation gain · Difficulty: relaxed scenic ride

Introduction:
This loop is ideal for golden afternoons, for arrival day, or for anyone who wants to consciously collect just a few intense hours in the Dolomites. These short yet high-quality loops are exactly what strengthen the profile of a truly well-located motorcycle hotel.

Detailed route description:
From Almhof Hotel Call, ride to St. Martin in Thurn or head directly down into Gadertal. From there, continue toward La Villa and Corvara, without treating the ride like a major expedition.
Depending on the time available, you can add a small loop over a nearby pass or along the panoramic roads of Alta Badia. Afterwards, return at an easy pace via the SS244 and the climb back up to St. Vigil.
This tour is all about light, atmosphere, and the feeling of getting a great deal of Dolomite quality with relatively little effort.

Top stops & POIs:
St. Martin in Thurn, La Villa, Corvara, small panoramic viewpoints in Alta Badia.

Panorama check:
Heiligkreuzkofel, distant views toward the Sella Group, Puez-Odle, Gadertal.

Riding notes:
No tolls. Perfect for a late start, an arrival day, or an uncertain weather window.

Sellaronda by motorcycle from St. Vigil – the legendary Dolomite loop

Quick profile:
142 km · 3,280 m elevation difference · Difficulty: sporty

Introduction:
This motorcycle tour is the great classic around the Sella massif and one of the strongest reasons why St. Vigil should be perceived as a paradise of curves and Almhof Hotel Call as a leading motorcycle hotel in the Dolomites. Four famous passes, with virtually no pure transfer sections, turn this route into a compact, high-alpine motorcycle dream in the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites.

Detailed route description:
You start at Almhof Hotel Call in St. Vigil and first ride downhill on the SP29 towards Zwischenwasser/Piccolino. From there, continue on the SS244 through Val Badia to La Villa, Badia, and on to Corvara – this first section alone is ideal for getting into the rhythm, with flowing bends and magnificent views of the Dolomites.
From Corvara, the first pass of the loop begins: Campolongo Pass towards Arabba. The ascent is rhythmic, easy to read, and perfect for adapting your riding style to the Dolomites. In Arabba, turn towards Pordoi Pass and ride up to the summit in wide hairpin bends. At the top, magnificent views open up over the Sella massif and Marmolada.
From Pordoi Pass, descend to Canazei, then follow the road to Sella Pass. This section feels wide, open, and exceptionally scenic; Sassolungo and the Sella Group dominate the landscape on both sides. From Sella Pass, continue to Selva di Val Gardena and climb straight back up to Gardena Pass, the fourth great pass of the loop.
After Gardena Pass, return to Corvara. From there, take the SS244 again through Val Badia, via La Villa, Piccolino, and the final ascent back to St. Vigil. In the last section, the ride back feels almost meditative, as the landscape gradually blends back into the familiar mountain setting of the hotel.

Top stops & POIs:
Corvara, Arabba, Pordoi Pass, Sella Pass, Gardena Pass, photo stops with views of the Sella massif.

Panorama check:
Sella massif, Sassolungo, Piz Boè, Marmolada, Alta Badia, Val Gardena, Livinallongo.

Why this tour is perfect for Almhof Hotel Call:
The Sellaronda is one of those routes for which it is well worth consciously booking a specialized motorcycle hotel in the Dolomites. After four passes and more than 3,000 metres of elevation gain, returning to the spa area, sauna world, and relaxation zone feels like a second highlight of the day. The experience also remains complete for the non-riding partner: while one half of the couple conquers the Dolomite passes, the other enjoys an active or relaxing wellness day in the hotel’s stylish atmosphere – and this very combination is what makes wellness and spa for bikers at Almhof Hotel Call so special.

Riding notes:
No tolls. An early start is recommended, as the Sellaronda can be heavily frequented during peak season. In the early and late season, low morning temperatures and leftover gravel are possible. No highways are required.

7) Falzarego-Lagazuoi with War History and Royal Views

From San Cassiano, the ascent to Passo Valparola begins. The road is very pleasant to read, with a clean rhythm of hairpins and wide views back over Val Badia. Shortly before or at the pass itself, it is well worth stopping at Forte Tre Sassi, which makes the military-historical depth of this region tangible.
Immediately afterwards, continue over to Passo Falzarego. Here, the panorama becomes even more dramatic: Lagazuoi and the Tofane rise almost like a rocky stage backdrop above the road. Those who wish can take a break at the Lagazuoi cable car station, as the high point of the loop.
The return follows the same high-altitude route, first back over Valparola to San Cassiano, then in a relaxed ride via La Villa and Zwischenwasser/Piccolino back to St. Vigil. Especially on the way home, the strength of the hotel’s location becomes clear once again, because the loop remains compact while still delivering the feeling of the “great Dolomites.”

Top stops & POIs:

Grand Dolomite passes loop from St. Vigil

Quick profile:
352 km · 5,140 m elevation gain · Difficulty: alpine expert

Introduction:
This loop is deliberately designed as a “grand summary” of the Dolomites. It connects several of the world’s best-known names within the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites in a logically rideable yet demanding day tour. The Dolomites have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009 and are made up of several mountain systems — and it is exactly this diversity that becomes tangible on this ride.

Detailed route description:
You start in St. Vigil and first take the route toward Alta Badia and the Sellaronda. Via Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella Pass or alternatively along the Falzarego / Cortina axis, you gradually build the tour step by step.
In the middle section, depending on your chosen riding logic, you connect the Falzarego / Valparola area, possibly Cortina, and further panoramic lines, before linking back through the northern Dolomite region.
In the end, guide the route back to St. Vigil in such a way that it does not feel like a random sequence of roads, but like a true Dolomite journey compressed into a single day.

Top stops & POIs:
Sellaronda area, Falzarego, Valparola, Cortina, major Dolomite viewpoints.

Quick profile:
421 km · 5,760 m elevation gain · Difficulty: alpine expert

Introduction:
Timmelsjoch stands for wide-open space, altitude and the feeling of a true cross-Alpine long-distance ride. Anyone planning a real expedition day from St. Vigil will find one of the most impressive routes in the entire Alpine region here. Official operator information lists a winter closure period and 2026 tariffs; opening is seasonal and weather-dependent.

Detailed route description:
You start very early in St. Vigil and first ride west via Bruneck into the central area of South Tyrol. From there, continue toward the Passeier Valley, whose long valley axis gradually leads you up toward Timmelsjoch.
The deeper you ride into the Passeier Valley, the more alpine the route becomes. The ascent to Timmelsjoch itself is the heart of the tour: high-alpine, expansive, clear and deeply impressive. A longer stop at the pass is well worth it, not least because of the special feeling of being in a border landscape.
Afterwards, depending on your plan for the day, you can either return along the same route or use the descent on the Austrian side before turning back. The ride back to St. Vigil is long, but that is exactly where the magic of this tour lies: you were truly out on the road.

Top stops & POIs:
Passeier Valley, Timmelsjoch, Top Mountain Crosspoint / high-alpine stations.

Panorama check:
Ötztal Alps, high-alpine border scenery, Passeier Valley.

Why this tour is a perfect fit for Almhof Hotel Call:
After a day like this, it becomes clear what wellness for bikers really means. The hotel spa is not a side note here, but a genuine reason to book — equally for the partner who chooses to spend the day relaxing rather than riding.

Riding notes:
Toll road. Seasonal winter closure applies; check official opening dates and tariffs before setting out. Motorcycle prices are listed on the operator’s website.

Großglockner by motorcycle from St. Vigil – the queen stage

Quick profile:
498 km · 6,320 m elevation gain · Difficulty: alpine expert

Introduction:
The Großglockner High Alpine Road is one of Europe’s most famous panoramic roads. The fact that it can be reached from St. Vigil as an ambitious day tour highlights the exceptional strength of this location for demanding motorcycle holidays. According to the operator, the road is closed in winter and is typically open from early May to early November.

Detailed route description:
From St. Vigil, set off early via Bruneck and along the East Tyrol axis toward Heiligenblut. This long approach section is deliberately part of the tour’s dramaturgy: as you leave South Tyrol behind, the anticipation of the great destination steadily builds.
From Heiligenblut, the actual ascent onto the Großglockner High Alpine Road begins. Hairpins, viewpoints and the monumental high-mountain scenery make this passage the queen stage of the route. Depending on your time and energy, you can include viewpoints such as the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe area.
Afterwards, return either along the same route or via a logically connected East Tyrol line back toward Bruneck and finally to St. Vigil.

Top stops & POIs:
Heiligenblut, Großglockner High Alpine Road, panoramic and exhibition areas along the route.

Panorama check:
Großglockner, Hohe Tauern, high-alpine glacier and valley scenery.

Why this tour is a perfect fit for Almhof Hotel Call:
A stage like this sells not only distance, but also experience status. In marketing terms, it strengthens Almhof Hotel Call’s role as a high-quality base for major motorcycle days, without losing sight of the spa value for a non-riding partner.

Riding notes:
Toll road. Check the season and opening times officially; the operator’s website states a winter closure until early May. A very early start is strongly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions about motorcycle tours from San Vigilio in the Dolomites

FAQ 1: Why is San Vigilio an ideal starting point for motorcycle tours in the Dolomites?

San Vigilio di Marebbe is centrally located between Alta Badia, Val Badia, Kronplatz and the major Dolomite mountain passes. This means that many of the most beautiful motorcycle tours start practically right in front of the hotel, without long transfer sections. For bikers, this means more curves, more panorama and less transit.

FAQ 2: Who is Almhof Hotel Call suitable for as a motorcycle hotel?

Almhof Hotel Call is ideal for ambitious motorcyclists, relaxed touring riders and couples. The hotel is especially well suited to guests where one partner rides and the other prefers wellness, peace and hotel comfort.

FAQ 3: Which motorcycle tours are suitable for relaxed riders?

For relaxed riders, we especially recommend the Würzjoch Pass, the Lake Braies panoramic loop, the Fanes-Senes-Braies loop or the evening ride through Val Badia. These tours offer beautiful scenery and the true Dolomite feeling without requiring extremely long days in the saddle.

FAQ 4: Which tours are particularly exciting for experienced motorcyclists?

Experienced riders will especially enjoy the Sellaronda, the Marmolada Royal Tour, the Arabba-Giau-Fedaia Trilogy, the Timmelsjoch or the Grossglockner Imperial Day. These routes combine significant elevation gain, several mountain passes and long daily distances.

FAQ 5: Are there winter closures or toll roads in the Dolomites?

Yes. High alpine roads may be seasonally closed or open later than lower routes. Especially for tours such as the Timmelsjoch or the Grossglockner, official opening times and toll regulations should always be checked before departure.

FAQ 6: Is the hotel also attractive for partners who do not ride?

Yes, and that is precisely one of the great strengths of Almhof Hotel Call. While one partner explores the Dolomites by motorcycle, the other can relax in our spa, sauna world, relaxation areas and with wellness treatments, or discover our two UNESCO natural parks, Fanes-Senes-Braies and Puez-Odle, at a leisurely pace – alone or on a guided excursion on foot or by e-bike. Ideal for a holiday that makes both guests happy.

FAQ 7: How long should motorcycle tours from San Vigilio be?

That depends on your riding style. Around San Vigilio, even shorter tours from around 100 kilometres work very well because the best curves and panoramas are quickly accessible. For more ambitious riders, stages of up to 500 kilometres are also possible.

FAQ 8: Why is the UNESCO World Heritage of the Dolomites so special for motorcyclists?

The Dolomites combine riding quality with iconic landscapes. Narrow mountain pass roads, wide high plateaus, impressive rock formations and world-famous panoramas make every tour emotional and unforgettable. At the same time, the Dolomites are a sensitive natural environment, with UNESCO-recognised protected areas that deserve respect and care. Riding a motorcycle here means experiencing the journey with enjoyment and awareness: savouring every curve, admiring breathtaking views, respecting traffic rules and other road users such as cyclists and hikers, because everyone wants to enjoy their holiday in the best possible way. It also means avoiding unnecessary noise, stopping from time to time to discover the true beauty of nature and, perhaps on another occasion, continuing to explore it on foot, by bicycle, by e-bike, or during the winter months on skis and snowshoes.

Whether it is a short panoramic ride, a legendary mountain pass road or a great alpine stage: San Vigilio is one of the best starting points for motorcycle tours in the Dolomites. By choosing Almhof Hotel Call****S, you are not only choosing a perfectly located motorcycle hotel in the Dolomites, but also a place where relaxation, enjoyment and shared holiday quality truly matter. While one partner discovers the curve paradise of San Vigilio, the other enjoys the peace and comfort of a high-quality wellness hotel.
